The LuzernQuartett has recently distinguished itself at the 1st International String Quartet Competition in Radom/Poland 2011 (2nd Prize and Special Prize) as well as at the ORPHEUS Competition 2011 in Geneva/Switzerland. The quartet was founded in 2009.
The four members were then studying at the “Hochschule Luzern-Musik”, where the quartet received guidance from Prof. Isabel Charisius and Prof. Sebastian Hamann. They also participated in masterclasses with Ferenc Rados, Felix Nickel, Adelina Oprean and Uli Fussenegger.

In June 2012 the ensemble completed a two year course for string quartets with the Alban Berg Quartet at the the “Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln”, Germany. In September 2012 the LuzernQuartett was invited by Valentin Erben to the festival “Les Musicales d’Orient” in Troyes, France. There they participated in masterclasses with Valentin Erben (Alban Berg Quartet) and Krzysztof Chorzelski (Belcea Quartet) and played in several concerts.

The LuzernQuartett performs a wide range of repertoire in Switzerland and abroad.

 

 

Mikayel Zakaryan

Mikayel Zakaryan

Mikayel Zarkayan, violin, was born in Yerevan, Armenia, in a family of musicians. He started playing the violin in 1990. At the age of nine he moved to Moscow with his family, where he studied at the Gnessin Music School from 1993 to 1998. He then continued his studies at the Tchaikowsky Music School and at the Conservatory in Yerevan, graduating with distinction in 2003. After this Mikayel came to Switzerland to study at the Music Academy in Basel with Adelina Oprean for a concert diploma, which he obtained in 2006. For the following four years he studied with Prof. Sebastian Hamann at the Lucerne Music Academy, receiving a teaching diploma (2008) and a Master of Solo Performance (2010).

Since September 2012 Mikayel Zakaryan has been a member of the “Sinfonieorchester Biel”. He has also been working as an extra with the “Orchestre de la Suisse Romande” since 2009. He participated in chamber music courses with Walter Levin, Gerard Wyss and the Artemis Quartett, in masterclasses with Isabel Charisius, Gyula Stuller, Ervin Schiffer and Hansheinz Schneeberger and has worked with Bernhard Haitink, Peter Eötvös, Vladimir Fedoseev, Dirk Brossé.

Izabela Iwanowska

Izabela Iwanowska, violin, grew up in Poland where she was born in 1982. She began taking violin lessons in 1989 at the music school in Koszalin. She graduated from the Gdansk Music Academy in 2006, in the class of Prof. M. Pawlak, having also completed an exchange semester in Hannover at the “Hochschule für Musik und Theater” in 2005. Izabela then continued her studies in Switzerland at the “Hochschule Luzern-Musik” with Prof. S. Hamann and Prof I. Karsko, obtaining a Master of Arts in Music-Orchestra and a Master of Arts in “Musikpädagogik” in 2012. She worked as a trainee with the “Luzerner Sinfonieorchester” for the 2010/2011 season.

Izabela Iwanowska has distinguished herself at various competitions for violin and chamber music and often performs as a soloist. She participated in masterclasses with Prof. J. Kaliszewska, Prof. K. Wegrzyn, Prof. E. Zienkowski, Prof. W. Marschner, Prof. W. Wilkomirska, Prof. M.Guillen.

Izabela has been a member of the Chamber Orchestra Hanseatica since 2002. In 2006 she was invited to play at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Bozen and from 2006 to 2007 she was concertmistress in the Baltic Symphony Orchestra in Slupsk, Poland. In 2008 Izabela was concertmistress of the “Jungen Sinfonie Berlin” under Marc Piollet.

Izabela Iwanowska often works with the Camerata Schweiz and she is a member of the Festival Strings Lucerne.

Valentine Ruffieux

Valentine Ruffieux

Valentine Ruffieux, viola, was born in Fribourg, Switzerland in 1982. When she was five years old she moved to the United States with her family, where she took her first violin lessons at the age of six. In 1994 she moved back to Switzerland and continued her musical education at the conservatory in Fribourg with Frédéric Gachet.

From 1994 until 1999 Valentine was a member of the “Orchestre des jeunes de Fribourg”. At the age of 16 she decided to change definitely from the violin to the viola. After an exchange year in Bolivia (1999-2000) she finished her schooling, obtaining a Baccalauréat in 2002.

In the fall of 2002 Valentine Ruffieux began studying the viola with Nicolas Corti and Wendy Champney at the Zürich University of the Arts, graduating with distinction in 2008 (Orchestra Diploma). From 2008 until 2010 she studied at the “Hochschule Luzern-Musik” with Isabel Charisius. She participated in masterclasses with Thomas Riebl and Kim Kashkashian.

Valentine was a member of the Swiss Youth Symphony Orchestra from 2002 until 2006, from 2004 as Solo Viola. She worked as a trainee with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich for the 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 seasons.

Valentine Ruffieux works regularly as an extra with Camerata Schweiz, Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Camerata Zürich and the Freiburger Kammerorchester. Since 2012 she has been a member of the Festival Strings Lucerne.

Thiemo Schutter

Thiemo Schutter

Thiemo Schutter, cello, was born in Bern, Switzerland in 1985. He began taking cello lessons in 1991 with K. Bögli ant the Gürbetal Music School. In 2002 Thiemo was accepted into the young talents class of the “Gymnasium Hofwil”. In 2008 he graduated with distinction from the “Hochschule der Künste Bern”, having studied with Conradin Brotbeck. He then completed a Master of Performance with Marek Jerie at the “Hochschule Luzern – Musik”.

Thiemo took masterclasses with Peter Wispelwey, Walter Grimmer, Valentin Erben, and Erik Borgir. At the Lucerne Festival Academy he worked with Kaija Saariaho and George Benjamin.

As well as being a passionate chamber musician, Thiemo is dedicated to contemporary music (he was a founding member of the “ensemble proton bern”) and to teaching.

Since August 2012, Thiemo has been a student at the Swiss school of violin making in Brienz.
